New Passport, Existing India eVisa: Check Before Reapplying

Published

Travel details should be reconfirmed near departure.

A new passport does not automatically mean you must buy another India eVisa. Check the existing ETA, the old document and current authority guidance before paying. The High Commission of India in London publishes guidance about travel with a new passport while carrying the old passport on which the ETA was issued.

The main eVisa portal also advertises an official service to transfer an existing ETA from an old passport to a new one. These are reasons to check the appropriate route, not a promise that every changed-document case can be handled in the same way.

First establish what actually changed

SituationWhat needs checking
Ordinary passport renewal; old passport retainedWhether the published old/new-document arrangement fits the valid ETA and the traveler's circumstances
Old passport lost or unavailableAn authority answer specific to the missing document; do not assume a photocopy meets a rule to carry the original
Name, nationality or other identity details changedWhether additional action is needed beyond a routine passport-number change
Existing ETA expired or unsuitable for the new tripThe appropriate permission for the proposed visit
Passport details were entered incorrectly originallyThe ETA discrepancy support route, rather than a renewal assumption

This table organizes the questions. It does not establish that each case qualifies for an official transfer or for travel using the old authorization.

Inspect the existing authorization

Find the issued ETA rather than relying on a payment receipt or a saved draft. Check its validity, use conditions and the passport to which it relates. Compare the new itinerary with the permission that remains available.

Keep the old and new passports accessible when checking the published arrangement. If the old document is missing, damaged or contains different identity information, explain that when asking the authority for instructions. Do not generalize the ordinary-renewal guidance to a different problem.

Use the current official transfer instructions

Start at the Government of India eVisa portal, where the existing-ETA transfer service is listed. Follow its current instructions for the case rather than purchasing an unrelated tourist application because a search result uses the word “renewal.”

This private website's ordinary eVisa application form should not be mistaken for the government's transfer service. Ask which service is actually being provided before paying a private charge. If you already placed an order here, contact our team with that reference first.

Check travel preparation with the carrier

Confirm which original documents the airline expects for your route and circumstances. Keep a copy of relevant authority instructions alongside the issued ETA and the travel documents. A private support message is not immigration permission or a boarding decision.

Avoid editing the passport number on a downloaded approval PDF. An edited copy is not a government amendment. If the official route requires action before travel, complete that process rather than relying on a self-made correction.

When a new application is appropriate

If the actual case needs a new eligible application, compare the available tourist durations and complete charges.

Our optional Urgent handling within 5 business hours adds US$69.99 per applicant for priority preparation and submission of a new assisted application. It is not a guaranteed ETA transfer or government approval deadline, and it does not remove the official advance-application window. Review processing before starting with Urgent handling.
